Mexico Calling, you should pick up!

Kacem Zoughari. Cuernavaca. May. Be There.

I've been to a lot of seminars, but some trips stay with you. My 2023 trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico was one of them, and I'm heading back on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th May 2026.

The seminar is hosted by Alan Vasquez, one of the warmest, most dedicated students of the art you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. His dojo is something else entirely, fitted out by hand, with a culture to match. No bad apples in that group, just people who show up, help out, and give everything they've got. Most of them speak English too, which I'll admit was a relief, since my Spanish begins and ends with ordering food (I intend to work on it, I promise).

Now, I hadn't been to Mexico since I was ten years old, so Cuernavaca was a genuine discovery. About fifty minutes south of Mexico City, it's lush and green and alive in a way that catches you off guard. The people are beautiful, the town is peaceful, and there's a stunning volcano not too far away just sitting on the horizon like it belongs on a postcard. You've got everything, great hotels, excellent restaurants, spotless shopping malls and all the outdoor adventure you could ask for. It really is a remarkable place.

Dont freak out, its like 40 miles (64km) away.

But let's be honest about why we're going. It's the 九流 (nine ryu) and the chance to train with Kacem Zoughari. If you haven't experienced his teaching before, I'm not sure words quite do it justice… silky smooth, deeply challenging, and completely absorbing. The pre-seminar classes take place in Alan's dojo, intimate and focused. Then the main seminar opens up into a larger space to accommodate everyone who makes the journey. Drinking through a fire hose would be an understatement, but Kacem wraps it all in humor, history, brilliant stories, and frankly quite a bloody good time.

This year's theme is 高木揚心流 (Takagi Yoshin Ryu). I've seen a couple waza of it in Japan, but never in a full seminar format with Kacem. What I can tell you is this: one moment you're standing, the next you're face-down on the tatami wondering how you got there. It's elegant, dynamic, and completely addictive.

For those of us in the USA, the logistics couldn't be easier. It's around a 3.5 to 4-hour flight, and I can't say enough good things about Aeromexico. Genuinely excellent service, and they win awards for a reason. Getting from the airport to Cuernavaca is a breeze with the private coach that takes you straight there.

A quick word on safety, because I know it comes up. I don't drink, I don't party, and the Mexico I know is warm, welcoming and safe. The worst thing I experienced about Mexico City is the traffic. In a town like Cuernavaca, everyone is just getting on with life, it's calm, it's beautiful, and nobody's looking for trouble. If that's your lifestyle and your vibe, you'll feel right at home.

So whether you're looking for a proper vacation with some world-class training bolted on, or a focused martial arts weekend that you'll be talking about for years Cuernavaca delivers on every level. It's easy to get to, surprisingly affordable, and the seminar itself is genuinely unmissable.

He asistido a muchos seminarios, pero hay viajes que simplemente se quedan contigo. Mi viaje a Cuernavaca en 2023 fue uno de ellos, y este mayo regreso.

El seminario es organizado por Alan Vásquez, una de las personas más cálidas y dedicadas al arte que tendrás el placer de conocer. Su dojo es algo completamente aparte, acondicionado con sus propias manos y con una cultura que lo refleja. Ahí no hay manzanas podridas, solo gente que se presenta, arrima el hombro y lo da todo. La mayoría habla inglés también, lo cual, lo admito, fue un alivio, ya que mi español empieza y termina pidiendo de comer (lo estoy trabajando, lo prometo).

La verdad es que no había estado en México desde que tenía diez años, así que Cuernavaca fue un descubrimiento genuino. A unos cincuenta minutos al sur de la Ciudad de México, es exuberante, verde y vibrante de una manera que te toma por sorpresa. La gente es hermosa, el pueblo es tranquilo, y hay un volcán impresionante en el horizonte que parece sacado de una postal. Tienes todo lo que puedas necesitar: hoteles de primera, restaurantes excelentes, plazas comerciales impecables y toda la aventura al aire libre que quieras. Es un lugar verdaderamente extraordinario.

Pero seamos honestos sobre por qué vamos. Es por las 九流 (nueve tradiciones) y la oportunidad de entrenar con Kacem Zoughari. Si nunca has experimentado su enseñanza, no estoy seguro de que las palabras le hagan justicia… fluido como seda, profundamente desafiante y completamente absorbente. Las clases previas al seminario se llevan a cabo en el dojo de Alan, íntimas y enfocadas. Luego el seminario principal se traslada a un espacio más grande para recibir a todos los que hacen la peregrinación. Es como intentar beber de una cascada, pero Kacem lo envuelve todo con humor, historia, historias brillantes y, francamente, un tiempo de lo más chingón.

El tema de este año es 高木揚心流 (Takagi Yoshin Ryu). He visto un par de waza en Japón, pero nunca en formato de seminario completo con Kacem. Lo que sí te puedo decir es esto: un momento estás de pie y al siguiente estás boca abajo en el tatami preguntándote cómo llegaste ahí. Es elegante, dinámico y completamente adictivo.

Para quienes estamos en los Estados Unidos, la logística no podría ser más sencilla. Son unas 3.5 a 4 horas de vuelo, y no puedo hablar lo suficientemente bien de Aeromexico. Un servicio genuinamente excelente, y ganan premios por algo. Llegar del aeropuerto a Cuernavaca es facilísimo gracias al autobús privado que te lleva directo.

Una palabra rápida sobre la seguridad, porque sé que surge el tema. Yo no tomo, no salgo de fiesta, y el México que conozco es cálido, acogedor y seguro. Lo peor que viví en la Ciudad de México fue el tráfico. En un pueblo como Cuernavaca, la gente simplemente vive su vida: es tranquilo, es hermoso y nadie anda buscando problemas. Si ese es tu estilo de vida y tu vibra, te vas a sentir como en casa.

Así que ya sea que busques unas vacaciones de verdad con entrenamiento de clase mundial incluido, o un fin de semana de artes marciales del que hablarás por años, Cuernavaca cumple en todos los sentidos. Es fácil de llegar, sorprendentemente accesible, y el seminario en sí es verdaderamente imperdible.
